A set of shaped self-adhesive masks for the glazing of the four-engine Avro Lancaster bomber in its fit for the attack on the dams, 1:72 scale. The outer side of the parts, Airfix kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
On the night of 16 to 17 May 1943 crew after crew took off from an East Anglian base to attack the water works in the Ruhr. The aircraft were modified Lancasters: they lacked bomb bay doors and the upper gun turret, a cylindrical charge hung under the fuselage on a fork and two spotlights shone in the floor, their beams meeting at a precise height above the water. The Möhne and Eder dams gave way, but the operation cost heavy losses and became one of the most quoted episodes of the air war.
The glazing of the Lancaster is extensive: a long greenhouse over the cockpit, a domed nose section and turrets with a great many small fields. Strips cut by hand almost always diverge somewhere on such an area. Cut segments get around the problem in that the width of the frame is set by the blade of a plotter, not by the modeler's hand.
Rid the transparent parts of fingerprints and let them dry perfectly. Transfer the segments one by one and on the rounded nose work from the middle toward the edges, stretching the film gently. Apply the paint in thin coats, as a heavy application easily builds up under the edge of the film and flakes off when it is removed. The package holds masking material only.
