About product

Stuart Mk.VI light tank (late M5A1) 1:72 — Mirage Hobby

This injection-molded plastic kit captures the American M5A1 light tank in its late production form, which with British and Allied units carried the designation Stuart Mk.VI. The scale is 1:72 and the maker is the Polish brand Mirage Hobby. The parts are molded in gray plastic, the model is supplemented by a small photo-etched fret and a decal sheet with markings; the tracks are supplied as one-piece flexible ones. For its size the model has very decent detail, but some of the smallest parts are slender and need careful cutting from the sprue.

The real subject

The M5A1 was the development peak of the American Stuart light tank series. Compared with the earlier machines it received a welded hull with a sloped front, a pair of Cadillac gasoline car engines with an automatic transmission and a turret with an extended rear that made room for a radio set. The main armament consisted of a 37 mm gun supplemented by machine guns. Late production machines can be recognized by the changes to the stowage on the hull and the turret. Stuarts of this type were used by the Americans, the British and other Allied units, among other places in Normandy and in Western Europe, and mainly as a reconnaissance and escort vehicle — its armament and armor were no longer enough for a duel with heavier German tanks.

Building and painting tips

Build and fine-tune the running gear and the suspension before you close the hull, because afterwards it is hard to reach. Cut the small parts off with a sharp scalpel, not by twisting, otherwise they may snap. Glue the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Begin painting with an overall olive base, go on with highlights on the upper surfaces and finish the edges. Apply the decals over a gloss clear coat and then seal with a matte one. Build up the patina with a dark wash in the recesses and with dust and mud effects from pigments on the lower part of the hull and on the tracks.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Allied armor in 1:72 scale
  • Anyone interested in the fighting in Western Europe and in light reconnaissance tanks
  • Modelers who want a small model with good detail and photo-etched parts
  • Builders of small dioramas and display arrangements

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the British designation of the American M5A1 light tank. The British gave American types their own names and mark numbers, which is why you meet both for the same vehicle.

The late machines differ from the earlier ones in the details of the stowage on the hull and the turret and in small production changes. The kit is aimed precisely at this late form.

They are one-piece flexible tracks that are fitted onto the running gear in one piece. Assembly is fast as a result, but it is a good idea to degrease the surface before painting.

A more experienced beginner will manage it, but some of the smallest parts are slender and harder to cut from the sprue. A sharp knife and tweezers are a necessity.
