In the Luftwaffe the tactical number was the main means of telling one machine from another within a Staffel. It was painted on the side of the fuselage ahead of the cross, and its color gave away which Staffel within the Gruppe the aircraft belonged to: white was the first, black or red the second and yellow the third. An experienced observer could therefore tell where a machine came from before he made out the emblem on the engine cowling.
The size of the numerals is derived from the Messerschmitts of the F, G and K series and will fully suit all production versions of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, as the name and the accompanying information from the maker of the sheet both state. The sheet is useful where the original decals from the kit have yellowed or cracked, or where the builder is putting together the markings of a machine that is in no box at all.
Before applying them it pays to polish the surface and coat it with gloss varnish, because a matte base holds air bubbles under the film. Release the numeral in warm water, carry it to the spot together with its backing paper and slide the paper out on the model. A softening solution helps the film press into the panel lines behind the canopy, so that the edge disappears once it is dry.
The number was usually outlined with a narrow strip of a contrasting color, so that it stood out even against the mottled paint on the sides of the fuselage. On machines used over the Eastern Front, that outline was sometimes all of the marking that remained visible at a distance. When building a particular subject, therefore, start from a period photograph rather than from a general table, and confirm the color of the numeral against another machine of the same unit in the same picture.
