A line-service fighter machine from the animated series about test pilots, rounded out with a launch rocket booster. A kit in 1:72 scale in injection-molded plastic.
Responsibility details are not available.
In its animated original the VF-11B Thunderbolt plays the role that service types play in a real air force: it is not the star of the story, it is the machine that flies in every unit and on which all the everyday work rests. The shape matches that: a stockier fuselage, robust air intakes and armament hung so that it can be changed quickly. The add-on rocket booster is the answer to a problem every atmospheric aircraft has in the world of the original: without it, it cannot get off the planet. It clips onto the spine and is jettisoned once exhausted.
The box holds injection-molded plastic sprues with the building groups of the fuselage, the wings and the landing gear, a clear molding for the canopy and an extensive decal sheet with unit markings and maintenance lettering, of which there tends to be a great deal on machines of this type. The parts of the rocket booster are listed as a separate group, so the machine can also be built without it and the booster displayed beside it.
Neither the chemistry for the build nor a display case is in the package. With this type, masking templates for the canopy and a gloss varnish under the decals pay off, because the extensive markings would silver on a matte surface. Metal barrels, a resin seat and photo-etched accessories are among the separately sold goods. The build itself is straightforward, though: the main groups fit together in a logical order and the only critical place tends to be the joint between the fuselage and the wings, where it is recommended to try the fit dry before reaching for the glue. The landing gear can also be seated retracted.
