Why in small scale in particular

In 1:72 scale the frame of a canopy is often less than a millimeter across. A strip of tape cut by hand twists at such a width, the edge ripples and paint creeps underneath. A machine-cut mask holds a constant width along the whole length of a strip, so the frame stays straight and equally thick even on a curve. On the two-seat cockpit of the F-15E, whose glazing is unusually large, that shows in the result at once.

Tips for working with small masks

• Work over a light-colored surface, as small masks are easily lost.
• Use the tip of a scalpel or fine-jawed tweezers to separate a mask.
• Press narrow strips down with a wooden stick drawn along the mask, not with point pressure.
• Before the color, overspray the edge of the mask in the shade of the frame or the interior — any creep will then not show.
• Draw the mask off at an angle across the edge; on thin strips help yourself with the tip of a scalpel.
