About product

1:72 Harrier GR.1/GR.3/AV-8A BASIC masks (New Ware)

Pre-cut masks for a model of the Harrier in its early GR.1, GR.3 and AV-8A versions in 1:72 scale. The masks are cut to the shape of the Airfix kit, so on the model they simply lie in place and hold; nothing has to be shortened or trimmed. The BASIC grade is the smallest version of the New Ware line and concentrates on the main glazing; the wider ADVANCED and EXPERT grades cover more of the airframe.

The real subject

The Harrier was the first combat aircraft in production service with vertical and short takeoff. The key to that was a jet engine with vectored thrust, whose four rotating nozzles directed the gas flow downwards or backwards. The British GR.1 and later GR.3 versions served as ground-attack aircraft, while the American AV-8A matched the early British standard. The machines could operate from improvised strips and from the decks of smaller ships, which was an exceptional ability at the time they appeared.

Working with the masking film

The material of the masks is supple and will take a little stretching, so it follows even slightly convex areas of the canopy without creasing, which is exactly what helps on the Harrier's bubble canopy. Once the mask is in place, press it down all the way round so that the edge stands proud nowhere. Spray with an airbrush in thin coats and aim straight down, not from the side under the edge of the mask. On early Harriers it helps to spray the glazing with a dark interior shade first and only then with the outer camouflage. Lift the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, drawing them at an angle across the edge. Keep the cut sheet: the offcuts serve for masking wheels, areas under sprayed camouflage or small panels.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of British postwar combat aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want an accurate and symmetrical frame on the bubble canopy
  • Those who spray with an airbrush and need reliable cover on the clear parts
  • Collectors who build several Harrier versions side by side and want a consistent look

The package contains masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

There is not. It is a set of masks for painting a model. Neither the kit nor paints are included.

The set is cut for the Airfix kit, which covers these early versions. The differences between the versions concern mainly the nose and the armament, while the cockpit glazing stays the same.

Yes. The material is supple and will take a little stretching, so once pressed down it follows even the convex canopy without creasing.

Not reliably. Once lifted, the adhesive loses its grip and the mask can no longer be placed accurately. The leftover sheet, however, is worth keeping for masking small areas.
