A decal sheet in 1:72 scale from the British manufacturer Xtradecal. According to the name it is the second part of a set of technical lettering for Phantoms in the FG.1 and FGR.2 versions in Royal Air Force form, specifically for machines in a gray finish. The contents are small servicing and warning markings. The extent of the sheet is given by the manufacturer on the packaging and the instructions inside.
British Phantoms went through a change of coloring during their service. While the older machines carried camouflage with contrasting areas, the later ones went over to overall gray low-visibility finishes. Along with the finish the look of the technical lettering changed as well: on gray machines the lettering tended to be subdued and less contrasting, so as not to disturb the overall appearance. That is exactly why separate lettering sheets exist for the earlier and the later coloring, and why the one that matches the form of the aircraft being built has to be chosen.
On gray machines the lettering is subdued and the wrong final varnish will easily swallow it. Keep to this order of work: a smooth and glossy base, the decals, after drying a thin covering coat of clear varnish and matting at the end. Lay the matte coat on in several very thin passes, as a heavy coat of matte varnish can optically wipe fine lettering away altogether. If you use a flattening agent in the varnish, try the small areas with lettering out on an offcut first. Keep the weathering on these machines in sparing measure, as subdued lettering will not stand up to rough treatment.
A decal sheet is not a kit. The model, paints, varnish and glue are not included in the package.
