About product

Masking set for the F-4EJ Phantom Kai in 1:72 (Eduard)

A set of pre-cut masks for a model of the McDonnell F-4EJ Phantom Kai in 1:72 from the Czech manufacturer Eduard of Obrnice near Most. It is not an airplane kit and not a photo-etched set but an aid that considerably simplifies the most demanding part of painting, that is masking the cockpit glazing. The masks are accurately shaped and you only have to lift them off the sheet with tweezers and stick them onto the relevant parts. Eduard also offers photo-etched sets for the same type of aircraft under very similar names, so when buying, check that you really are ordering masks.

The real subject

The F-4EJ Kai is an upgraded version of the twin-engine supersonic Phantom II fighter, operated by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. The upgrade concerned above all the radar, the avionics and the fire control systems, while the external shape stayed typical of the late Phantom versions, that is a two-seat cockpit, markedly cranked wings with upturned outer panels and drooping horizontal tail surfaces.

Usage tips

Stick the masks onto a clean, degreased surface, ideally after the glazing has been polished. Press the edges down thoroughly with a blunt tool, so that no paint runs under them. Spray the paint in thin coats; one heavy coat increases the risk both of paint creeping under and of pulling the finish off when the mask is removed. Remove the masks shortly after the paint has dried, not after days, when the adhesive has set hard. Residues of adhesive can be removed with adhesive tape or a cotton bud dampened in alcohol, but mind the edges of the coat.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Phantom model in 1:72
  • Modelers who want crisp transitions on the cockpit frames without cutting tape by hand
  • Beginners and the advanced alike; working with masks needs no special experience
  • Those who want to save time on the most time-consuming part of preparing to paint

The set contains masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. The package contains only a sheet of pre-cut masks. The Phantom kit in 1:72 itself has to be bought separately.

The masks are cut for a particular kit, as the shape of the glazing differs between manufacturers. Before buying, check against the manufacturer's data which kit the set is cut for.

The exact extent does not follow from the name. Sets of this type usually cover the cockpit glazing and, on some aircraft, the wheels or small surfaces as well. Check the contents against the packaging and the enclosed instructions.

Shortly after the paint has dried, usually within hours. If a mask stays on a model for a long time, the adhesive hardens and removing it can pull the finish off.
