Caracal Models decals in 1:72 scale for the controlled aerial targets QF-4E, which came about by converting Phantoms of the F-4E version. The set holds markings; a model of the aircraft is sold separately.
Worn-out Phantoms were turned into remotely controlled aerial targets on which missiles were tested and the crews of combat aircraft trained. The airframes received equipment for control from the ground, a system for terminating a flight in an emergency and so-called high-visibility markings: richly orange panels on the wingtips and the tail surfaces, so that the machine would be clearly visible even at a great distance. Most of the flights took place with nobody on board; a pilot flew mainly on ferry flights and trials. The last targets of this kind ended their service in the middle of the 2010s.
The large orange panels tend to be printed on the sheet as continuous pieces and bend less well over edges. Divide them, then, with a cut along a panel line and apply them in sections. The surface shows through under rich colors, so it is a good idea to have a light coat of varnish underneath them. Once dry, unify the surface and mist over any visible edges of the carrier film with a light pass of the base color.
