A basic 1:72 masking set for the long two-seat canopy and the wheels of the reconnaissance version of the Phantom used by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
Responsibility details are not available.
Japan operated Phantoms longer than most other users. Alongside its fighter machines it also kept a specialized reconnaissance unit whose aircraft carried cameras and later podded sensor containers. The last of them flew out their service at Hyakuri air base in the early 2020s.
It was precisely the reconnaissance machines that wore striking camouflage and bold unit insignia, so they rank among the rewarding subjects to build. A crisp transition between frame and glass matters all the more on them because the long two-seat cockpit takes up a substantial part of the upper silhouette of the fuselage.
The package covers the framing of the canopy and the wheel rims. In a small scale the cockpit frame tends to be so narrow that cutting tape by hand does not pay off even for an experienced builder, and pre-cut shapes save a whole evening.
On the Phantom the canopy is divided into several hinged sections, and between them a fixed frame remains that splits the cockpit into two parts. Before building it pays to decide whether they will stay closed or whether the model will be built with the cockpit open.
Always mask longer straight runs of the frame with a single piece; a spliced strip gives the joint away after spraying and the transition is then visible even under matte varnish.
