A model of the MD-3 ground electrical power source in 1:72 scale from the Czech manufacturer CMK. It is not an aircraft model but a piece of airfield ground equipment that is built on its own and completes an aviation scene: a power cart standing beside an aircraft with its cable run out immediately explains what is happening in the diorama and adds both scale and a story to the scene. In a kit of this type it is a small number of parts with fine surface detail, so it is work for one or two evenings and a suitable addition to any model of a jet aircraft in this scale.
Ground power units, GPUs for short, supply a parked aircraft with electrical power for preflight checks, for powering the avionics and for starting the engines, without using up the capacity of the onboard batteries. The MD-3 designation covers a family of small mobile units used by the US Navy at airfields and on the decks of aircraft carriers, where space is limited and the equipment has to be compact and low. The cart has its own combustion engine with a generator, cable drums and a tow eye; it is handled by ground personnel, who push it to the aircraft or tow it with a tractor.
Proceed as with a small vehicle: first assemble and paint the frame and the mechanical parts, and only then close the outer panels. Wash the resin parts in warm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and glue them with super glue. Ground equipment tends to be markedly worn in service, so heavier weathering pays off on it than on an aircraft: a dark wash into the corners, paint rub-through on the edges, oil stains and dust pigment on the underside. You can finish the cables from thin wire or from stripped strand and run them to the aircraft model, which ties the whole scene together. Suggest the warning lettering and stripes sparingly.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
