India introduced the Mirage 2000 in the mid-1980s and the machines became one of the basic types of the Indian Air Force. They made their name in 1999 in the Kargil area, where they carried precision munitions against targets in high mountain terrain. The two-seat versions serve for crew training and for duties in which the second crew member operates the navigation and targeting equipment. Structurally it is a single-engine supersonic aircraft with a tailless delta wing and fly-by-wire controls.
