The 1:72 Mitchell Mk.II canopy mask set from Dead Design. The templates cover the glazed areas of the twin-engine bomber, so the frames can be sprayed in one go and evenly. Target kit: Airfix.

A set of templates for a medium bomber model, not a kit. On a fighter there is a single canopy; here the job is far larger: the glazed nose, the pilot's canopy and the gunner's stations mean dozens of small panes and a great deal of framing with them. Tape cut by hand never comes out the same width across that many shapes, and uneven frames are obvious at first glance on a finished model. Pre-cut templates remove the problem because the width of the frame is set by the die cut, not by your hand. The masks are cut for the Airfix kit.
Mitchell Mk.II was the British designation of the twin-engine North American B-25 medium bomber in the version delivered to the Royal Air Force. The aircraft was powered by a pair of Wright Cyclone radial engines, had a twin vertical tail, a nose with a glazed station for the navigator and bombardier, and defensive armament in fuselage turrets. The extent of the glazing gave the type its characteristic look and at the same time makes it one of the most laborious models to mask.
Work in sections and do not try to apply everything at once. Finish one group of panes first, check against the light to see whether a gap has been left anywhere, and only then carry on. Press the edges down with a blunt tool, ideally a wooden one, so that the clear part is not scratched. Spray the frames first with the interior color and only after it has dried with the airframe color, so that the wrong shade does not show through from the inside. Lift the mask off gradually and at an angle, not straight up.
