A masking sheet in 1:72 scale for the Japanese Mitsubishi F1M2 Pete observation seaplane. Shading gives the fabric surfaces of the biplane depth and relief.
Responsibility details are not available.
Masks for an airbrush for the Mitsubishi F1M2 observation biplane in 1:72 scale. They make it possible to shade the rudder, the elevators and the ailerons so that smooth plastic gets depth and comes across as fabric stretched over a structure. Nothing is removed or sanded down in the process.
The F1M2 was a catapult-launched observation aircraft on floats carried by Japanese cruisers and battleships. It looked archaic, but it was exceptionally agile, so besides directing gunfire and reconnaissance it managed patrols against submarines, convoy escort and, at a pinch, even the role of a fighter against slow targets. The arrangement with one large main float under the fuselage and two auxiliary ones under the wings was usual in the Imperial Navy. The construction combined a metal structure with fabric covering on the control surfaces. More than a thousand were built and it served from the beginning of the war to its end. The Allies knew it under the name Pete.
On a biplane it pays to work surface by surface and to let each one dry before the next comes in turn. Protect the struts and the bracing with a piece of tape so that no overspray falls on them. Only at the close, unify the whole surface with a thin coat of clear.
