Animals tend to be underrated in a diorama, and yet they work better than one more soldier: the viewer registers them at once and the scene gains a narrative detail from it. This item offers monkeys, a motif that is almost missing from the ordinary choice in the small scale.
A jungle scene, a market in warm countries, a zoo or a scene around abandoned hardware that animals have taken over all suggest themselves. The last option in particular is rewarding, because it combines a rusting machine with a living element and creates the contrast the whole composition rests on.
At a size this small the coat cannot be painted hair by hair, and there is no need for it either. The basis is a darker tone, over it a light pass of a dry brush in a lighter color following the lie of the coat, and finally a dark glaze into the recesses. Set the facial parts and the paws apart with a warmer shade. A matte varnish at the end is especially important with animals, because sheen gives an artificial surface away at once.
The animals are sold unpainted; you choose the vegetation and the ground to go with them separately. Before painting it is a good idea to degrease the castings and let them dry out properly, so that the paint holds even on rounded surfaces.
