A sheet set of water-slide decals in 1:72 scale from Print Scale. The sheet is devoted to the Japanese Nakajima A6M2-N float fighter, derived from the well known A6M carrier fighter. It is not a model and not a kit: the decals go onto an already built and painted model and they make it possible to build an aircraft in a form other than the one the decal sheet in a kit offers.
The Nakajima A6M2-N was a float conversion of the A6M carrier fighter, developed and built for the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service by the Nakajima company. A large central float on struts under the fuselage and two smaller auxiliary floats under the wings took the place of the original landing gear, and the vertical tail surfaces had to be enlarged so that the aircraft stayed directionally stable. The aim was to obtain a fighter able to operate from water where an airfield could not be built quickly, typically on islands in the Pacific area. For that ability the aircraft paid with a noticeable drop in speed and agility against the original version. With Allied forces the type was listed under a code name of its own, different from that of the basic version.
A float aircraft has many struts and busy surfaces, so apply the decals while access to the fuselage and the wings is still good. Overcoat the surface with a gloss varnish first, so that no white haze forms around the decals. Cut the motif out closely, dip it in lukewarm water for a few seconds and let it rest out of the water until the film starts to slide on the paper. Slide it onto the moistened surface, adjust the position with a soft brush and blot the water with a towel. A decal softener will settle the decal over engraved lines and the curve of the float. Once dry, even the model out with a matte varnish. Japanese naval aircraft were used in a demanding damp environment, so mild wear of the finish is convincing on them, but apply the weathering only at the end.
