A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for a model of the B-25B Mitchell medium bomber in 1:72 scale from the Czech manufacturer Eduard, based in Obrnice near Most. It is neither a decal, a photo-etched set nor a resin accessory: the masks serve to cover the glazed areas so that the windows stay clear after spraying and the frames have a crisp edge. The masks are cut to match the shape of the parts and are applied directly to the model. Which particular areas the set covers is stated on the box of the set.
A bomber has glazing in several places on the airframe, from the cockpit through the forward glazing to the observation and gun positions, and there are a lot of frames. Cutting strips of masking tape by hand on a model like this takes hours and the edges tend to be uneven. A pre-cut mask removes this work and above all makes the width of the frames uniform, which shows immediately in the small 1:72 scale. The masks are made of a thin paper material that follows slightly curved surfaces well and leaves no adhesive behind when removed.
First degrease the glazing and let it dry completely. Lift the mask off the sheet with pointed tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, set it in place and press the edge down with a toothpick so that no paint flows under it. Spray in thin coats and work from the edge of the frame inwards. Remove the mask as soon as possible after the paint has dried, while the film is still flexible; with paint that has dried for a long time there is a risk of tearing. The tip of a scalpel slipped under the edge helps. If paint has flowed underneath somewhere after all, scrape it carefully away with a toothpick, not with metal.
The set contains masks only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
