A sheet of decals in 1:72 scale from the British manufacturer Xtradecal. The subject is the North American P-51B Mustang fighters of the 4th Fighter Group of the US Army Air Forces, which during the Second World War operated from the British airfield at Debden in eastern England. The package contains decals only.
The P-51B is one of the early versions of the Mustang fitted with a license-built Merlin engine, thanks to which the type gained its performance at high altitude. It is told apart from the later machines by the razorback canopy, that is the unbroken line of the fuselage behind the pilot, in place of the later bubble canopy. It is this silhouette that determines which model the markings from the sheet suit. The machines of the American fighter groups operating from Britain wore conspicuous identification markings on the nose and the tail surfaces.
On most sheets the carrier film reaches some way beyond the artwork itself, and it is exactly its edge that tends to show on a finished model. It pays to trim it with a sharp knife as close to the motif as possible, ideally on a glass surface and before soaking. With markings of irregular shape there is no need to follow the outline exactly; it is enough to reduce the area of film to a minimum. The rest is taken care of by a gloss base, a softener and a final matte varnish.
The product is a decal sheet, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
