A 1:72 decal sheet with the personal markings of the Mustang of Captain Charles Weaver. The motif is among the best known artwork of an American fighter unit.
Responsibility details are not available.
Personal paintings on American fighters came about at the stations in eastern England and tended to be the work of mechanics with an artistic gift. The motif this sheet is devoted to is among the frequently reproduced ones: it decorated the aircraft of Captain Charles Weaver and, together with the pilot's name, you will find it today in every larger picture publication on fighter units over Europe.
Weaver flew with the group that settled at the airfield at Leiston and fought from the winter of 1944 practically without a break until the end of the war. It was there that a number of the most photogenic Mustangs came about, because the unit had enough experienced mechanics and its machines lasted longer than elsewhere.
For a model that means a rewarding subject. At 1:72 the nose art fits on an area the size of a fingernail, and yet it decides whether a finished model comes across as a particular aircraft or as a sample of a type. It therefore pays to build from a photograph and to watch the position of the motif relative to the exhausts and the edge of the cockpit.
A small colored motif takes only a minimum of handling, because its edges are very thin. Let it release on the paper and slide it onto the model so that tweezers do not touch it at all. Once settled, press it down with a damp cloth and apply a decal softener only at the moment the motif is exactly in its place, because after it is used you will not move it again.
