About product

Opel Maultier (Sd.Kfz.3) 1:72 - plastic kit (Roden)

An injection-molded plastic model of the German half-track truck Opel Maultier (Sd.Kfz.3) in 1:72 scale from Roden. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted. For the exact contents of the box go by the enclosed instructions and the markings on the box.

The real subject

The Maultier, meaning mule, was created by converting the ordinary three-ton Opel Blitz truck into a half-track. The rear wheeled axle was replaced by a tracked suspension, which gave the vehicle better going in mud and snow - a solution called for above all by the Eastern Front. The vehicle kept its front steering wheels and was routinely used as a supply and towing vehicle. It was a cheap and readily available alternative to full half-tracks.

Building and painting tips

On this vehicle, finish the running gear, the rear tracked suspension and the cab first, and close the body only afterwards. Separate the small, delicate parts from the sprue carefully. Spray the base over primer and apply the colors with an airbrush; fine-tune the weathering with washes into the recesses and with pigments for mud and dust effects on the tracks and the wheel arches.

Who the model is for

  • For anyone interested in German supply vehicles of the Second World War
  • For collectors of half-track vehicles in 1:72 scale
  • For modelers who do mud and dust weathering
  • For builders of small Eastern Front dioramas

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Maultier means mule. It was a conversion of the ordinary Opel Blitz truck into a half-track with a tracked rear suspension for better going across country.

The rear wheeled axle is replaced by a tracked suspension; the vehicle keeps its front steering wheels. That let it handle mud and snow better.

Cement for plastic, a knife and files, primer and modeling paints, ideally an airbrush, and possibly washes and pigments. They are not included in the package.
