Decals 1:72 for four B-25J Mitchell bombers of two bombardment groups deployed over the Mediterranean.
Responsibility details are not available.
Bombardment Groups 321 and 340 were among the mainstays of the Allied air effort in Italy. Their B-25Js took off from field airfields, attacked bridges, marshaling yards and supply routes in the Alpine foothills, and their machines carried prominent colored bands on the tail surfaces by which the formations recognized each other in the air. It was exhausting work and little remembered, and yet it was these units that cut off the supply of material to the German forces in northern Italy.
The sheet offers four sets of personal markings. Besides the machine named Ave Maria you will also find Reddie Teddie and Briefing Time, while the fourth aircraft is identified by its serial number and squadron code. In 1:72 you can therefore build several different models from one sheet without having to hunt down further sets.
Besides a kit of the bomber, gloss clear varnish, a softener and fine tweezers come in useful, because in a smaller scale the lettering is small and breaks easily. Soak a decal briefly and let it release on a paper surface rather than in the water itself. Once you are finished, varnish the whole model so that the edges of the backing disappear.
A small scale has the advantage that finished models take up less room, so one sheet can produce a whole group of machines from one unit. If you plan to build several, think through the arrangement of the colored bands on the tail surfaces in advance, because they differ between the two groups and are sprayed with masking rather than applied as decals.
