About product

OT-133, a Soviet flame-throwing tank 1:72 (UM)

The kit captures the Soviet OT-133 flame-throwing tank in 1:72 scale. It is made by the Ukrainian brand UM, which focuses on armored vehicles and artillery weapons and whose models tend to be divided into a fairly large number of small parts. The package contains injection-molded plastic parts; the model is neither glued nor painted. The 1:72 scale means a compact finished model with which a whole range of variants of one chassis can be displayed in a small area.

The real subject

The OT-133 is one of the flame-throwing forms of the T-26 light tank. The basic idea was simple: in place of part of the armament and the ammunition, a tank of incendiary mixture was built into the vehicle and a flamethrower replaced the gun in the turret. The vehicle kept the chassis and the hull of the original type, so at first glance it differs from the standard version above all in the turret and the layout of the equipment. Light tanks of this range made up a numerous part of the Soviet armored units before the Second World War and served as the basis for many derived forms.

Building and painting tips

In 1:72 scale the parts of the running gear are very small, so work over a light surface and use tweezers. Glue the wheels and the bogies in one go and check as you work that they lie in one plane, otherwise the track will not sit down. The fenders tend to be thicker in plastic than scale would suggest, and it pays to thin their edges with abrasive paper. Glue with a thin cement for plastic, drop by drop. Apply the paint with an airbrush in thin coats, because in a small scale a heavy coat quickly fills the fine surface detail in. Keep the weathering more restrained than in large scales, otherwise the model looks dirty rather than dusty.

Who the model is for

  • Builders of armored vehicles in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers interested in interwar light tanks and their variants
  • Collectors who assemble a range of derived forms of one chassis
  • More experienced modelers who do not mind small parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a flame-throwing form of the T-26 light tank. The chassis and the hull stayed the same as on the base type; the turret armament and the internal layout changed.

Count on the running gear parts in 1:72 scale being small and fairly numerous. The exact number of parts is given in the instructions with the kit.

Rather for a modeler who has already built at least one vehicle kit. The small parts of the wheels and tracks call for tweezers, good light and calm.

A thin modeling cement for polystyrene applied with a brush into the joint. Spray the paints with an airbrush in thin coats so that the fine surface detail is preserved.
