A photo-etched set for a model of the P-39Q Airacobra fighter in 1:72 scale. The thin metal parts refine the details that plastic renders coarsely in a small scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The P-39 Airacobra was an American fighter of the Second World War with an unusual layout: the engine was placed behind the pilot, in the middle of the fuselage, and a drive shaft ran under the cockpit floor to the propeller. The cockpit was entered through doors at the sides as in a car and the aircraft stood on a nosewheel undercarriage, which was rather an exception among fighters at the time. The letter Q denotes one of the late production versions. A large part of the machines built went to the Soviet Air Force.
Photo-etched parts are thin metal elements cut out of sheet. They are fitted where a plastic part comes out too thick in 1:72 scale, that is, on control panels, grab handles, mesh screens and similar small items. Which parts the set covers and which kit it is intended for is given in the manufacturer's instructions, so go through them in full before starting work.
In 1:72 scale the parts really are small, so have tweezers, a sharp blade and a hard surface ready. Cut the parts off and never tear them out, as bent sheet is hard to straighten. Sand the remainder of the holding tab back. Make the bends along a ruler or in a photo-etch bending tool and bond them with super glue applied in a tiny amount on the tip of a toothpick; a drop of glue taken straight from the bottle will drown a small part. Degrease the sheet before painting and apply a base coat, otherwise the paint will not hold on smooth metal. Work over a surface with a raised edge, as a part that jumps away at this size is usually never found again.
The set contains only photo-etched parts. The kit of the aircraft, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
