Cockpit glazing masks for the P-47D and P-47M 1:72 (Omask)

This item is not a kit of an aircraft, but a set of precisely cut self-adhesive masks. It serves to mask the clear parts of a model, that is above all the frames and areas of the canopy, so that after spraying the glazing stays clean and the frames have sharp edges. Masking by hand with tape takes a great deal of time on a canopy curved in two planes and the result tends to be uneven; a pre-cut mask shortens this step to a few minutes.

The real subject

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was an American fighter and fighter-bomber of the Second World War, exceptionally heavy and robust, powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine with an exhaust-driven turbocharger. The P-47D version became the most numerous and in the later batches received a teardrop canopy with a view to the rear. The P-47M version arose as a high-speed conversion with a more powerful powerplant and was deployed at the very close of the war; it had the same teardrop canopy, which is why one mask covers both types.

Use

Stick the masks onto a clean and degreased part, best of all with tweezers and a pointed toothpick, so that the edges settle into the engraved frames. Press the edges down properly, so that paint does not run under them. Spray in thin coats; a heavy layer makes a step at the edges. Take the mask off while the finish is still freshly dry, not days later, otherwise the paint may come away with it. The remaining areas of glazing are best covered before painting with a masking fluid or with tape.
