What is interesting about this sheet is that it follows the development of a single machine over time. According to the data it holds the markings of a late Mustang of the D version from the twentieth series, as Captain Charles Weaver of the 357th Fighter Group flew it, and beside that his older machine from the early fifth series, still in camouflage paint.
The difference between the two appearances matters for a build. The early aircraft had a dark upper finish, on which the personal artwork and the codes behaved visually differently from the later unpainted surface. Anyone who takes the trouble and builds both variants side by side gains a pair for a display case that tells the story of one career better than two randomly chosen subjects.
The late series of the D version also brought small technical changes, among them a modified shape of the fin and differently arranged racks under the wing. Before building it therefore pays to compare which series your kit actually represents and to adapt the parts if necessary.
With the camouflaged variant reckon that matte paint takes up water more slowly and film slides on it less well. Applying a glossy layer, letting it cure and using a little more water than usual while transferring will help. The late machine without paint, by contrast, calls for care while polishing, so that the edge of a decal does not lift.
