Markings in 1:72 for Mustangs of the B, C and D versions: identification numbers, letters and victory symbols in a variant for aircraft without camouflage, in bare metal.
Responsibility details are not available.
From the spring of 1944 most American fighters in England stopped wearing camouflage and flew in polished duralumin. This sheet aims at exactly such machines: according to the data it offers identification numbers and letters including victory symbols, in a version intended for a surface with no paint.
The choice is more practical than it seems. On bare metal the markings were drawn in dark shades so as to be visible, whereas on a camouflaged machine light shades were used. Anyone who confuses the sheets will end up with letters on a model that were never in the photograph of its subject.
The range B, C and D covers the whole mature era of the type. The B and C versions still had a framed canopy and a fuselage spine, to which a supplementary fin was later added, whereas the D brought the bubble canopy. Victory symbols were painted under the cockpit beside the name of the machine and tended to be handled differently for every pilot, so it pays to check a photograph of the period for them.
Metallic paints tend to be delicate, so apply a thin layer of gloss varnish to them only where a decal is to go. Transfer the elements wet and align them with a wooden stick rather than a finger, so that no fingerprints are left on the surface. Finally polish the area gently, so that the transition from film into metallic shine is not visible.
