The Consolidated PBY Catalina was an American twin-engine flying boat for long-range patrol over the sea, for search and for the rescue of castaways. The PBY-5A version is an amphibian: it received retractable wheeled landing gear, so it could take off from water as well as from land. The identifying marks of the type are the wing carried high on a pylon above the fuselage and the pair of glazed observation blisters on the sides of the rear fuselage. Patrol flights lasted for hours over an empty sea, and the roomy fittings inside the fuselage matched that.

Photo-etch makes it possible to render elements that cannot be made in plastic at a matching thickness, that is grilles, straps, loops, stiffeners and similar small items. Which parts the fret carries and which kit it is cut for are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
Separate the parts with a sharp blade on a hard surface, as scissors will ripple the metal. Make the bend over a straight edge or in a bender and manage it at the first attempt; repeated bending tires the metal and the part breaks. Degrease the mating faces before gluing, otherwise neither the glue nor the paint will hold. Seat small parts on a drop of super glue applied with the tip of a toothpick, while on larger areas two-part epoxy gives you time to align them. Metal needs a base coat before painting; without it the paint rubs off in ordinary handling.
The set is for modelers who want finer detail on the large fuselage of the Catalina than injection-molded plastic allows, and who have tweezers and a steady hand to hand. The kit, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
