A scenery accessory from the Czech manufacturer Model Scene for dioramas in 1:72 scale. It is a laser-cut wooden part that is taken out of its frame, assembled and set into a scene. Unlike a tall fence, which closes off the view into a scene, a low fence merely frames it: the viewer sees over it to the garden, the yard and the figures behind it, so it suits the foreground of a base, where a tall fence would get in the way.
Low board fences bordered front gardens, vegetable beds, the path to a house or a poultry run. In a diorama it therefore works well around a dwelling, by a village green, along a sidewalk or as the division between two levels of terrain. It also proves itself as a way of closing a composition off at the sides of a base, where it leads the viewer's eye back to the main motif.
Release the parts from the frame with a sharp scalpel and sand the remains of the tabs with the finest abrasive paper. Paint before gluing, as thinned acrylic paint or a wood stain lets the texture of the wood come through. The top edges of the boards are usually the most washed out by rain, so run a dry brush in a lighter shade over them, while at the foot apply a darker wash and a little fine soil. On a low fence every post is clearly visible, so set them carefully upright and only then apply the grass material around them.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The glue, the paints and the other scenery materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
