The Pz.Kpfw. III was a German medium tank of the Second World War and in the first years of the war it formed the backbone of the tank units. Wide tracks 56 cm across increased the contact area, lowered the ground pressure and improved mobility in mud and snow. On a model it is a conspicuous change to the silhouette, as the wider track projects noticeably further out at the sides than a track of ordinary width.
A width of 56 cm works out in 1:72 scale at just under eight millimeters. Replacement tracks give the model the correct profile and clearer definition than a part from the kit can manage, especially where the kit carries the track in one piece. The scope of the set, the number of parts and how they are fitted are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
The material of the parts and the recommended glue are given in the manufacturer's instructions; according to the material, choose either plastic cement or cyanoacrylate. Cut the excess material off a short way from the part with a sharp blade and sand the remainder. Wash and degrease the parts before painting. It is more comfortable to paint the tracks separately and fit them to a finished running gear. Leave a slight sag between the return rollers, as a taut track looks hard on a model. A dark application into the recesses and a dry brush on the edges help at the end.
