This set from the manufacturer Strelets-R captures figures of the plain armed levy of medieval Rus in winter clothing. It differs from regular military sets in that instead of uniform equipment it offers mixed civilian clothing and simple gear. The figures are of soft plastic, in 1:72 scale, supplied unpainted and calling for no assembly. In a scene they fill a role uniformed sets cannot manage: they lend it social layering and work in a more civilian way.
The winter clothing of this time rests on layering. The base was formed by a long tunic, over it a coat or a sheepskin, on the head a cap with a fur band, on the feet tall footwear or wrappings. Protective equipment was absent or only improvised, and the arms corresponded to whatever was at hand. For a modeler what matters is that none of these elements was uniform, so in painting you are not bound by any prescription.
The procedure is the same as with the other soft plastics: deburring with a scalpel, washing in lukewarm water with detergent, thorough drying and a thin base primer. The painting is more entertaining here than with uniformed sets. Keep to the natural palette of undyed cloth and cloth dyed with plant dyes, that is, muted brown, gray, ocher and greenish tones, and vary them freely between the figures. Work the fur bands with a thicker dry brush, so that the texture is caught. Layered clothing comes out when you leave the under tunic lighter than the outer coat, as the boundary between the layers then stays legible even in a small scale. A light suggestion of snow on the shoulders and the footwear suits a winter scene, only very sparingly, otherwise the scene looks dusty rather than snowy.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, primer and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
