About product

The landing gear bays of the carrier Viking in seventy-second scale

The anti-submarine S-3A has sizeable spaces for the main landing gear and when building a model they are more visible than one would expect. Covering their openings makes it possible to paint the inside and the surrounding skin each separately and with no mutual overspray. This is an aid for painting; the plastic model is a separate item. The cut is calculated for the Hasegawa kit.

A submarine hunter from the deck of an aircraft carrier

The machine came about in the 1970s as a replacement for the piston-engined Tracker and entered the US Navy in 1974. A pair of General Electric TF34 turbofan engines slung under the wing gave it the endurance thanks to which it could circle for hours over the area being searched. The crew consisted of four people: two pilots and two operators of the onboard systems. In the fuselage there was room for sonobuoys and an internal bomb bay, and the wing and the vertical tail folded for the hangar under the flight deck. The nickname Hoover came to the aircraft from the characteristic sound of the powerplants, which was more like a household appliance than a combat jet machine. It stayed in service for decades and gradually took over tanker and reconnaissance tasks as well.

What to watch out for when painting

The inner spaces of carrier aircraft tend to be markedly lighter than the surrounding camouflage, so paint them first and let them dry properly. Lay the covering from the center toward the edges and press it down with a blunt toothpick, so that no air bubble is left anywhere. After spraying, run the blade of a scalpel around the perimeter before you take the mask off; the paint then does not tear away across the area.

Suitable above all for

  • Those interested in Cold War carrier aviation
  • Modelers who finish the view of a model from below in detail
  • Builders who want the bays set apart in color with no covering by hand
  • Collectors of American naval equipment in seventy-second scale

FAQ

It will not; it is an accessory for the painting phase of a model already part-built.

Inside there is usually a different shade from the skin and without covering the boundary bleeds.

Yes, working with it is easier than cutting tape accurately into a complicated shape.
