About product

Photo-etched set for the SG-38 glider in 1:72 scale

This is not a kit but an add-on set of photo-etched metal parts for a plastic model of the SG-38 training glider in 1:72 scale. According to the name the set is cut for the Special Hobby kit, which with this type is an important detail: a different set is intended for another kit of the same glider, so go by the designation of the target kit in the name. Thin metal parts make sense above all on an aircraft with an exposed truss structure, where the plastic version is necessarily thicker than the scale would call for. Check the actual contents of the package and the number of parts on the box of the set.

The real subject

The SG-38 was a simple single-seat training glider of the 1930s with an open truss fuselage structure, a strut-braced wing and a pilot's seat almost without a cover. It served for basic gliding instruction and was built around a cheap and easily repaired structure. On a model it is exactly that exposed framework that becomes the main theme, because it is visible in its entirety and sets the final impression.

Fitting and painting tips

In 1:72 scale the parts are very small, so work with a scalpel with a new blade, tweezers and good lighting. Cut the parts off on a hard surface and hold them down so that they do not spring away. Glue the metal with cyanoacrylate glue in a small amount, and on larger areas with a slow-setting epoxy. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a base coat, otherwise the finish will easily peel off the tiny parts. On a truss structure it works well to paint in two layers with thinned paint, so that the fine gaps are not flooded.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the SG-38 glider in 1:72 scale from the Special Hobby kit.
  • Builders who feel up to tiny photo-etched parts in a small scale.
  • Collectors of gliders and models from the early days of soaring.
  • Competition building, where the exposed structure is the main theme.

This is an accessory set, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

According to the name, for the SG-38 glider kit in 1:72 scale from Special Hobby. A different set is intended for another kit of the same glider, so go by the designation in the name.

It is not. This is an add-on set of photo-etched parts. The plastic model has to be obtained separately.

The parts are tiny, and you need a sharp scalpel, tweezers and good light. For a complete beginner it is not an ideal first photo-etched set.

Check the number of parts on the box of the set.
