An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet SG-122 self-propelled gun in 1:72 scale from the Ukrainian maker UM. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. UM has long devoted itself to the less usual types of military equipment in the small scales, and the SG-122 is a good example: it is a machine that is hard to find in the range of other makers.
The SG-122 came about as an improvised but remarkable solution: the Soviet Union took captured German assault gun chassis and fitted them with a superstructure of its own carrying a 122 mm howitzer. The result was a close-support self-propelled gun intended to destroy fortified positions and firing points by direct fire. Only a small number were built and their combat career was short, partly because of the difficulty of supplying spare parts for a captured chassis and partly because the series-produced Soviet types were more practical. It is precisely this short episode of 1942 that makes the SG-122 a rewarding subject and one prized among collectors.
In 1:72 scale nippers, a sharp scalpel and thin cement for plastic metered out with a small brush all pay off. Dry-fit the superstructure, check that the edges line up and only then glue it; on angular casemate structures every gap shows. Assemble the running gear and the tracks on a flat surface. We recommend painting over a primer: Soviet green with an airbrush in thin coats, then a dark wash in the engraved lines and a dry brush on the edges. Dust and mud pigments on the lower hull and the running gear give the model credibility for the scale.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
