1:72 Spitfire Mk.IXC

1:72 Spitfire Mk.IXC decals (Bilek)

A sheet of wet decals in 1:72 scale from the Czech manufacturer Bilek. This is an accessory, not a kit — in the package you will find only markings, with which you replace or add to the decals from your own box. The particular schemes, their number and the extent of the lettering are stated on the box and in the instructions for the set. Before building, lay the sheet against the parts of the model and check the position of the markings.

The real subject

The Spitfire Mk.IX is the fighter version with a V12 engine fitted with a two-stage supercharger, which markedly improved performance at greater altitudes over the earlier guises. The letter C in the designation refers to the so-called universal wing, which allowed different armament fits without altering the structure. The version was built in large numbers and used by a great many Allied squadrons, including units with Czechoslovak crews, so markings for this type are among the most rewarding for modelers.

Applying the decals

Roundels and stripes on curved surfaces call for patience. Varnish the surface with a gloss clear coat compatible with the paint used, soak the decal briefly in warm water and let it release on paper. Move it across with a soft brush, draw off the excess water and use a decal softener so that the film settles into the engraved lines and over the edges of the wing. Once it is completely dry, unify the surface with a matte or semi-gloss varnish, which beds the edges of the film in.

Who the set is for

• Builders of British fighter aircraft in 1:72 scale
• Modelers whose decals from an older box have aged or cracked
• Anyone after a different marking variant from the one the kit offers
• More experienced modelers who work with softeners and with varnishing under decals

This is an accessory — a sheet of decals. The kit, paints, glue and varnishes are not included in the package.
