Two sheets of stencils trace one of the most complicated production schemes of the Cold War. The boundaries between the color fields are broken at sharp angles and run across the wing, the canards and the fuselage, so cutting them out of tape by hand means hours of work and almost certain inaccuracy. Pre-cut film removes that step and at the same time holds its shape even over rounded transitions.
The Swedish Air Force reckoned with dispersing its machines to road bases and forest sites, where the view from above threatened them most. That is where the multicolor pattern of angular fields comes from, imitating a mosaic of fields, forests and water. The underside of the airframe stayed uniform in a light tone instead. The Viggen in this finish is one of the most striking machines of its day and it is the main reason why the type gets built.
Work color by color from the lightest to the darkest and let the finish harden between rounds. Always stick on only the part of the stencils that matches the tone being sprayed, otherwise too much paint builds up at the edges and the edge thickens. Check how the parts carry over onto the neighboring field; on multicolor patterns a shift of a tenth of a millimeter shows. Finally lift the film off with a diagonal pull toward yourself.
