The Su-30SM is a Russian two-seat multirole combat airplane of the family that follows on from the Su-27. The crew sits in tandem one behind the other, which tells during a build: the cockpit is long, two workplaces are visible under the glazing and every piece of unfinished work in it is glaring. The machine also has foreplanes ahead of the wing. The airplane serves for attacks on ground and aerial targets and carries a wide assortment of stores.

Photo-etched metal is thin metal sheet with an etched relief and is used where a part is to be thin on the real subject: instrument panels, seat straps, levers, meshes, flaps and small panels with relief. Which parts of the model the set completes and which kit it is matched to are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
In 1:72 scale the parts are genuinely small, so have tweezers with a fine tip, a sharp blade and light that casts no shadows ready. Work over a surface with a raised rim, as a part that falls will not be found in the carpet. Separate the parts with a blade on a hard surface and level the remains of the tab with a fine file. Make the bend along the marked score line in one movement. Dispense the glue with the tip of a wire, as a drop from the nozzle is enormous at this scale and will flood over the part. Degrease the metal before painting and cover it with a base coat. And above all: if a set offers more than will fit onto the model, it is no disgrace to use only part of it, as a badly seated part does more harm than a missing one.
