Peewit 1:72 masking set — Sukhoi Su-7U

This item is NOT a model of an aircraft but an accessory for the build. It is a set of precisely die-cut self-adhesive masks in 1:72 scale for a model of the two-seat Sukhoi Su-7U trainer. The templates follow the framing of both cockpit canopies and usually also the tires of the landing gear wheels. On the two-seat version the glazing is longer and more complex than on the single-seat machine, so masking takes considerably more time — a ready-made template cuts it to a minimum. Peewit is a Czech brand specializing in masking templates for aircraft models.

The real subject

The Su-7U was the two-seat training version of the Soviet Su-7B fighter-bomber, that is of the single-engined aircraft with a swept wing and the characteristic circular air intake in the nose. To fit a second station into the fuselage, the structure had to give way — the cockpits received separate sliding canopies one behind the other and the rear of the spine gained a conspicuous dorsal hump, into which part of the equipment and fuel was moved. The flying qualities remained close to the combat version, so the machine served both for converting pilots onto the type and for keeping their training current. Besides the Soviet Air Force it was operated by a number of foreign users who had taken the basic combat version into service, and in some countries it stayed in service long after the single-seat machines were withdrawn.

Use

• lift the piece of mask out of the sheet with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel
• stick it on a dry and degreased clear part and press the edges down carefully
• work one frame at a time and do not hurry with two cockpits
• spray several thin coats and let them flash off in between
• lift the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, pulling back at an angle

Who the set is for

For modelers of Soviet and Eastern European aviation and for everyone who builds two-seat training versions, where masking is twice the work. It is worthwhile even for less experienced modelers, because it removes the riskiest step in building clear parts.

The set holds masking templates only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package. The masks are cut to fit a particular kit, and on a model of another origin the shape of the frames may differ.
