The Short Sunderland grew out of a civil long-range airliner and became the most successful British patrol boat of the war. The crew lived aboard for whole days: it had a galley, bunks and a workshop, because patrol flights over the Atlantic lasted more than half a day. German crews nicknamed it the Flying Porcupine because of the number of defensive machine guns, which could beat off an attack by several fighters at once. The Sunderland escorted convoys, searched for submarines and rescued survivors; the first series designated Mk I still carried four Pegasus engines and a turret with a single pair of barrels in the nose.
The hull of the boat has windows along its whole length, with the cockpit and the glazed turrets besides, so masking is among the most laborious steps on this model at all. The pre-cut outlines cover the individual fields and do away with measuring. The pattern for the shapes is the kit by the brand Italeri in 1:72 scale. The outer side of the glazing is covered. Anyone who wants to cover the inside of the windows as well will reach for a solution of his own.
On a long row of windows it pays to apply them one after another and to keep checking whether the row is starting to wander. Before spraying we recommend gently going over all the edges, because it is precisely on small round fields that an edge lifts most easily. Choose a thin paint and leave enough time between coats, because a dried edge holds its shape far better than a fresh one. Once they are off, go along the row of windows against the light and correct any bleed with a brush with a very fine tip. The kit, paints and glue are not included, as the item is meant for painting exclusively.
