The Spitfire Mk.V was the most numerously built of the early versions of the Spitfire and in the first half of the war made up the backbone of the British fighter units. It came about by joining the airframe of the previous version with the more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine of the 45 series. The most widespread sub-version, the Vb, combined machine guns with a pair of 20 mm cannon, and the Vc version was given the so-called universal wing. Machines deployed in the Mediterranean and in North Africa were recognized by the bulky dust filter under the nose. British roundels went through several changes of shape and proportion of colors during the war, which matters when building a model of a particular machine.
A glossy, perfectly hardened finish belongs under decals. Cut the elements out tightly by the artwork, soak them briefly in warm water and let them rest until the film comes loose. The roundels on the wing run across engraved lines and panel seams, so decal softener applied in thin layers comes in handy; once the film softens, stop moving it. Soak the surplus water away with a paper towel and seal the finished markings with varnish in the degree of gloss you want.
