The Mk.XVI is a late version of the Spitfire with a Merlin engine built under license in the United States. It is set apart from the otherwise very close Mk.IX version precisely by the origin of its powerplant. The letter e in the designation defines the arrangement of the armament in the wing, which combined cannons with heavy machine guns. Some machines had clipped wingtips, and later batches were given a cut-down rear fuselage with a bubble canopy, so the appearance differs noticeably from machine to machine.
The Spitfire has a markedly rounded fuselage and a narrow tail, where large decals do not sit flat. Onto such areas, lay the decal on a well-dampened base and shape it gradually: first settle the center, then press the edges down on both sides with gentle pressure from a cotton swab. Where the film starts to form wrinkles, a short spray or a thin application of softener helps, after which the material gives to the shape. Never pull at the edge of a dry decal, as it will tear where the tension is greatest.
