The 1:72 Tachikawa Ki-54 Hickory control surface and flap masks serve to spray a shadow along the dividing lines of the moving surfaces. The resulting optical illusion gives the impression that the surfaces are separate and deflected.
Responsibility details are not available.
This set does not mask the cockpit or the insignia; it is intended for bringing out the control surfaces, flaps and other moving surfaces of the airframe in color. The masks are applied along their outlines and a darker tone is sprayed into the exposed gap. The eye reads the resulting shadow along the dividing gap as depth, so on a finished model the surface looks offset and slightly deflected. It is a purely optical illusion laid on with paint; the surface stays a fixed part of the component and does not deflect anywhere.
The Tachikawa Ki-54 was a twin-engine trainer and liaison aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. It was used for training pilots, navigators and radio operators and for transport duties. The Allies assigned it the code name Hickory. On aircraft of this generation the control surfaces and flaps had fabric-covered areas with pronounced rib structure, so setting them apart optically pays off on a model.
Use the set only on a dry base coat of the airframe. Apply the masks exactly along the engraved lines of the part and press down above all the edge where the shadow will begin. Spray the shadow lightly with an airbrush and in several passes: the aim is a soft transition, not a sharp stripe. The thinner the coat, the more convincing the impression. Once the paint has set, take the mask off and unify the whole surface with clear varnish, so that the shadow does not stand out as a layer of its own.
