The Panavia Tornado IDS with the fuselage number 44+61 carried a festive painting in 2014 for forty years since the first flight of the type. That took place over Manching in Bavaria, that is exactly where the machine was based in the jubilee year – the artwork and the place thus have a common origin. The sheet transfers this form onto a model in 1:72 scale.
The festive graphics sit on the vertical tail surface and on the spine of the fuselage, whereas the rest of the airframe stays in ordinary operational camouflage. From that follows the order of work: first the basic shades including the transitions between them have to be finished, and only then does the artwork come. The large motifs run over riveted seams and over the rounding of the fin, so they cannot be handled like a small national insignia.
The set suits a kit of the corresponding scale; the model itself and the paints are not included in the package. Once dry it is advisable to unify the whole with a clear varnish in such a degree of sheen as the real machine had. A matte final spray will suppress the sheen of the print and bring the surface closer to a dusty operational machine; a semi-gloss one, by contrast, suits machines that went to a ceremony freshly repainted. The difference between the two variants is visible more on a fin with a large motif than anywhere else on the model.
