The U-2 is an American single-seat reconnaissance aircraft built for flight at great altitude. You recognize it at a glance by its unusually slender wing of great span, which gives it the look of a glider, and by its narrow fuselage with landing gear arranged on the centerline. The wingtips are supported during the takeoff run by auxiliary dollies, which the aircraft sheds once airborne. The nickname Dragon Lady became attached to the type because of how sensitive its handling is at the edge of the flight envelope. The letter C in the name tells one of the variants of the type apart.
Masks for a model of the U-2C in 1:72 scale, cut from kabuki tape. It is made of thin Japanese paper, conforms well to a curved surface, holds only lightly and leaves no sticky residue when removed. The word BASIC in the name denotes the level within the masking range. Which areas of the model the set will cover and which kit it is cut for is given in the manufacturer's instructions; go through them before the build.
The masks are stuck on before spraying, onto a clean, degreased surface. They are laid on with tweezers and pressed down from the center toward the edges, so that paint does not seep under the edge. Apply the paint in several thin coats; a single heavy coat creates a ridge at the edge of the mask that stays visible even after it is removed. Take the mask off as soon as the paint has set, pulling perpendicularly upward and preferably with the tip of a toothpick rather than a fingernail. Keep the small offcuts; they come in useful for covering places a whole part will not fit.
