About product

Photo-etched detail set for the V-156B Chesapeake in 1:72 scale (Special Hobby)

This item is not an airplane model but a detail accessory: a sheet of parts etched from thin metal sheet for a model of the V-156B Chesapeake in 1:72 scale. On carrier aircraft of the late 1930s an etch makes sense in several places at once — struts, cockpit ribbing, flat covers and small fittings are among the parts that injection-molded plastic can manage only as a rough approximation in a small scale. The exact contents of the sheet are given by the description on the packaging. The manufacturer is Special Hobby, a Czech brand focused on aircraft models and accessories.

The real subject

The V-156B was the export version of the American carrier dive bomber Vought SB2U, delivered to the British naval services under the name Chesapeake. It was a single-engine two-seat machine with a radial engine, a cantilever wing and a conventional landing gear. In British service it turned out that its performance no longer met the requirements for operation from smaller decks, and the machines served above all in auxiliary and training roles.

Usage tips

Degrease the metal with alcohol before working. Separate the parts with a scalpel and never break them off; then sand the remains of the tab down with a fine file. Struts and thin sections twist easily, so take them out only just before fitting. They are bonded with super glue, and around clear parts near the cockpit rather with a glue that does not fog, or with epoxy. Apply the paint onto a primer. With a two-seat cockpit it pays to fit and paint the interior parts before you join the fuselage and close the glazing.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the SB2U or the Chesapeake in 1:72 scale
  • anyone interested in naval aviation of the turn of the 1930s and 1940s
  • builders experienced with photo-etched parts and fine tweezers

This is an accessory, not a complete model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a photo-etched accessory to a plastic kit in 1:72 scale. The model is bought separately.

The cockpit interior first, because once the fuselage is joined and the glazing is on you can no longer reach it. The external struts and fittings come at the very end of the build.

Yes, which is why you should take them off the sheet only just before gluing and handle them with flat tweezers, not with your fingers.
