1:72 Vickers Valiant kabuki masks

1:72 Vickers Valiant masking set (New Ware)

An accessory to a kit in 1:72 scale, not a model. These are pre-cut self-adhesive masks on a carrier tape that are laid on the parts and protect them during spraying. On a large bomber such a set is more practical than on a small model, because every hour spent preparing by hand is multiplied here by the size of the build.

The real subject

The Valiant was the first of the three British jet bombers that formed the backbone of the strategic forces of the Royal Air Force in the 1950s. It had four jet engines buried in the wing roots and a clean shape that was modern for its day. It lasted less time in service than its later colleagues: operating at low altitude took its toll on the airframe and the type was withdrawn in the mid-1960s. For the modeler it is a large and striking machine whose model takes up its share of a display case, and on which the quality of the spray finish on large smooth surfaces shows clearly.

Building and painting tips

On large models most of the work is in the evenness of the spray finish, not in the detail. Divide the build into stages and mask as you go, not everything at once. Gloss white and light shades, typical of machines in this class, are demanding on the cleanliness of the surface underneath: every speck of dust and every fingerprint shows through them. Mask the glazing right at the start and leave the masks in place for the whole of the painting, as taking them off and putting them back does not pay. Spray large areas in overlapping passes at a constant distance, otherwise streaks appear.

Who the set is for

• Builders of large postwar bombers in 1:72 scale.
• Modelers of British Cold War aircraft.
• Those who would rather not spend hours taping up a large model by hand.
• Builders of light and glossy schemes, where every run of paint stands out.

This is an accessory, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
