About product

1:72 Lockheed S-3A Viking canopy airbrush mask - a masking set from MH models

A masking set from MH models intended for masking the cockpit glazing on a model of the Lockheed S-3A Viking carrier aircraft in 1:72 scale. The masks are stuck onto the clear part, which is sprayed over with the color of the frames, and the masks are taken off afterwards. The frames are thus formed exactly along the engraved lines, even in width and with no paint running onto the clear part. It is not a kit but an accessory to a model.

The real subject

The Lockheed S-3 Viking was a carrier-based jet aircraft of the US Navy brought into service in the 1970s, intended primarily for anti-submarine warfare and patrol duties over the sea. It has a high-wing layout, two turbofan engines in nacelles under the wing and a crew of four in two rows of seats. The design allowed for operation from aircraft carriers, that is a folding wing, an arrestor hook and a reinforced landing gear. The S-3A version was the first production variant; later a large part of the fleet was upgraded to the S-3B standard.

Use and masking tips

Lift the pieces out of the sheet one at a time with the tip of a scalpel and stick them on step by step. Offer each piece up to the clear glazing and press it into the engraved edges of the frame, so that no air is left under the edge. Cover the extensive glazing of the flight deck and the side windows of the rest of the fuselage with masking tape in the unglazed places, and fill the inside of the cockpit with a piece of damp tissue. Spray in two steps: the shade of the interior of the frames and, once that is dry, the external finish. Apply the coats thinly - on large clear parts a step on the edge of the mask shows strongly. Once the masks are off, lifted away with tweezers, small shortcomings can be evened out with a thin layer of clear varnish.

This is not a model of the aircraft and not a kit. Paints, varnish and the base model are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is only a masking set for the glazing. An S-3A Viking model in 1:72 has to be bought separately.

Spraying through a mask gives the frames the same width along their whole length and a clean edge against the clear part. A hand-painted frame tends to be uneven and the paint gets onto the glazing.

Fill it with a piece of damp paper tissue or with masking putty, because otherwise the paint settles inside the clear part as well.

The masks are cut for a particular shape of clear part, so they need not line up on another kit. The target model is not stated here, so please check the shape before you buy.
