A bust of a Celtic warrior belongs among the subjects that stand outside the usual military themes of the twentieth century. The 1:9 scale given in the name is somewhat larger than with most busts by this brand, and that suits the theme, because here the expression is carried by the face, the hair and the jewelry.
In the last centuries before the common era Celtic tribes inhabited a belt from Ireland to the Carpathian Basin, and in our country names such as the Boii or the oppidum of Zavist remain after them. A warrior of that time tends to be associated with the neck ring called a torques, with a long slashing sword and with a large oval shield. Ancient authors also described hair stiffened with lime water and rich beards, which were meant to make an impression on an opponent before the weapon did. Among the Celts the warrior retinue was a social class, not just a temporary occupation.
The theme rests on the contrast of three surfaces: bare skin, coarse cloth and polished bronze. Leave the skin rather light and cooler than with later uniformed subjects, so that painted patterns stand out if you decide to add them. Build the hair from the darkest tone upward and lay the lights only on the uppermost strands. Bronze jewelry differs from steel in that its shadow leans toward green and its light toward a warm yellow; if you hold this difference, the metal will stop coming across as a gray area.
