About product

Jan Zumbach, November 1942 - a 200 mm bust

A portrait bust from the Polish maker Mirage Hobby in a size of 200 mm. The figure denotes the height of the casting rather than a scale, so the item cannot be compared with figures for dioramas. It is a stand-alone display object intended for modelers who enjoy painting a face and the fine details of equipment. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The subject is a Polish fighter pilot in the service of the Royal Air Force with the rank of Squadron Leader, as he appeared in November 1942. The abbreviation of the rank in the name contains a slash, which matches the usage of the time and is not an error. For painting, the decisive elements are those of the equipment of the early 1940s: a service tunic, a flying badge, and possibly a helmet with goggles or a life vest.

Assembly and painting tips

Before work, wash the castings in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry. Remove the parting seams with a scalpel, sand the remainder with fine paper and check the surface against the light, because at a large format even a barely noticeable line will stand out. Apply the primer in a thin coat so that the modeling is preserved. Paint the face from the shadow areas toward the highlights; do the eyes before you start toning the surrounding skin, as corrections are then easier. Tone the textile parts of the uniform with glazes and run the shadow along the actual folds rather than along the engraving. Leave the metal parts until the end and apply the matte coat over them only carefully. Finally set the bust on a base that goes with the colors of the uniform.

Who the bust is for

  • Figure painters who want to practice painting skin at a large format
  • Anyone interested in the flying clothing of the Second World War
  • Collectors of portrait busts
  • Modelers looking for a shorter project without building a whole model

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Busts are not given by scale but by the height of the finished casting. The figure of 200 mm is therefore not a scale and cannot be compared with 1:35 figures.

It is the rank of Squadron Leader, that is the commander of a squadron in the Royal Air Force. The spelling with a slash was usual at the time.

A matte coat will even the surface of the uniform out. It is better to coat the metal parts only in spots so that they keep their sheen.

Yes, paints and glue. A base is not included in the package.
