A collector resin figure in 54 mm size from the brand Abteilung 502. The 54 mm size corresponds roughly to 1:32 scale and it is the typical format of a figure meant for display on its own, not an accessory to a vehicle model. The subject is a soldier of the British 30th Regiment of Foot from the Crimean campaign of 1854. Abteilung 502 also has another figure from the same campaign, so the two can be displayed as a pair.
The casting comes on casting blocks and with traces of the parting plane of the mold. Cut the blocks off with a saw or a knife leaving a margin and finish them with sandpaper; breaking them off does not pay with resin, which cracks away from the intended spot. Then wash the whole figure in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap, or remains of mold release agent will keep the primer from adhering. Fit the parts dry first, putty any gaps and sand them back, so that no visible line is left under the paint. It is joined with super glue, as cement for plastic has no effect here. Wear respiratory protection while sanding and cutting.
The basis is a very thin primer, which at the same time reveals the seams you missed. At 54 mm size every transition shows, so build the color up in layers and place shadow and light deliberately rather than over the whole area. Abteilung 502 is a brand associated mainly with oil paints, and oil is not acrylic: it thins with mineral spirits or turpentine, not with water, and it dries in a matter of days rather than minutes. That long open time is a great advantage for smooth blending on skin and on cloth, but it forces you to plan the order of the work. With acrylics the same effect is built with many very thin glazes. Leave the leather and metal parts until last, because their contrast against the cloth of the uniform carries the whole result.
The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
