A set of 3D printed water lily leaves from Green Stuff World for low vegetation on a diorama. Lily pads is the English name for the floating leaves of a water lily, that is for vegetation that grows not on the ground but on the surface.

How it differs from other vegetation

This is growth that is not layered onto terrain but onto water, and in that it is exceptional among scenic greenery. That is exactly why it is worked with quite differently from grass, foliage or leaves. A water surface is the most conspicuous and at the same time the least believable part of a diorama, because with nothing on it, it looks like glass. Floating leaves are the quickest way to give a surface scale and depth, and they also cover the places where poured water did not settle ideally. They work with ponds, oxbows, swamps, garden pools and flooded craters.

How it is layered

• The water has to be finished and cured before the leaves are set onto the surface.
• Cluster the leaves irregularly and leave open water between them; a continuous carpet looks like a lawn.
• Keep rather to the edges and the shallows; in reality water lilies do not grow in the middle of deep water.
• Add reeds, grass or low greenery on the bank, so that water and land join on to each other.
• A base coat unifies the shade of the leaves with the color of the water surface.
